Choosing the Right Temperature Probe: RTD vs Thermocouple vs Thermistor

Choosing the right temperature probe is essential for achieving accurate and reliable temperature measurement. Different sensor technologies are designed for different applications, temperature ranges and operating environments.

The three most common industrial temperature probe types are:

•Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

•Thermocouples

•Thermistors

Each offers its own advantages depending on the application.

Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

RTDs are one of the most accurate and stable temperature sensing technologies available. They operate by measuring the predictable change in electrical resistance of a platinum sensing element as temperature changes.

The most common RTD sensors are PT100 and PT1000, both of which are widely used in pharmaceutical, food processing, biotechnology, HVAC and industrial process applications.

Advantages

•Excellent accuracy and repeatability

•Long-term stability

•Wide operating temperature range

•Suitable for precision process control

•Available in Class A, Class AA and 1/10 DIN tolerances

Typical Applications

•Pharmaceutical autoclaves

•Sterilisation validation

•Food production

•Environmental monitoring

•Laboratory equipment

•Industrial process control

If your application demands high accuracy and reliable long-term performance, an RTD is usually the preferred choice.

Thermocouples

Thermocouples measure temperature by generating a small voltage between two dissimilar metals. They are extremely versatile and can withstand harsh operating conditions, making them one of the most widely used industrial temperature sensors.

Common thermocouple types include Type T and Type K.

Advantages

•Very wide temperature range

•Fast response times

•Durable construction

•Cost-effective

•Suitable for high-temperature applications

Typical Applications

•Heat treatment

•Furnaces and ovens

•Pharmaceutical validation

•Steam sterilisation

•Plastics processing

•General manufacturing

Thermocouples are ideal where ruggedness, speed of response or high-temperature capability are more important than ultimate accuracy.

Thermistors

Thermistors use semiconductor materials whose electrical resistance changes significantly with temperature. They provide excellent sensitivity over a relatively narrow temperature range.

Although less common in heavy industry, thermistors are widely used in electronic equipment and temperature monitoring systems.

Advantages

•Very high sensitivity

•Excellent accuracy over a limited range

•Compact size

•Low cost

Typical Applications

•Medical devices

•HVAC controls

•Consumer electronics

•Refrigeration equipment

•Battery temperature monitoring

Thermistors are best suited to applications where temperatures remain within a relatively narrow operating range.
